The University of London was established by Royal Charter in 1836 and is one of Europe's pre-eminent universities, in the same league as Oxford and Cambridge in the UK, recognized globally as a leader in Higher education. It is a federation of distinct, separate and, in many cases, multi-faculty self governing Colleges, together with specialist Institutes. The External Programme was established in 1858 to make University of London degrees accessible to students who were not able to study at the University in the conventional way.
The University offers Undergraduate courses by distance learning in a wide range of subjects including : Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business, Business Administration, Computing and Information Systems, Classical Studies, Development and economics, Economics, Management, Humanities, History, Laws, Philosophy, Politics and International Relations, Sociology and Theology.
Students receive an introductory package of study materials. This may include Subject guides, Regulations and Student Handbook, Resource Guide, past examination papers and examiners reports. However, students on some programmes are required to purchase their own text books. In some countries tutorial support may also be available. Technology provides additional support through the new Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Students are also encouraged to network with each other
