Centre for Financial & Management Studies (CeFiMS) - University of London

PG Diploma in Economic Principles

Examinations

  • Each individual course, with the exception of Research Methods / Dissertation is assessed by a three hour unseen written paper and by the submission of two assignments. Each assignment should be of about 2,500 words and will take the form of written work prepared in response to a task or tasks specified by the Course Director, some of which will demand work with original data. If you take courses in econometrics or quantitative methods, the assignments will include numerical and interpretative exercises.

  • The grade awarded on each individual course will be based on the mark obtained in the written examination and on the combined mark for the assignments on the course. The examination counts for 70% of the final course grade and the combined mark of the assignments will count for the remaining 30%

  • The Research Methods course unit will be assessed by submission of a written dissertation relating to both theory and policy issues of not more than 10,000 words, excluding the bibliography and appendices.

  • If you fail an examination at the first sitting, you will be allowed only one further attempt, after which your registration will cease.

  • Examinations are normally held in a student's country of residence, using the existing system of overseas examinations authorities, which the University of London operates for all its external students. Details are available in the University Regulations which are sent to all registered students

  • Examinations for students in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland are normally held in London

  • Examinations for this programme, both overseas and in the UK, take place once a year from September to mid-October

The examination timetable is drawn up each year after all the entry forms for a particular degree have been received from the Examination centres worldwide. Arrangements for ad hoc centres are not made.

The standard of the examination for the degrees is the same as that for students studying on-campus at a college of the University. Upon graduation you will be awarded a degree which will be classified according to the marks you have obtained.

Even though you register as an External student it does not mean that you are automatically entered for your examinations. You have to apply to enter. The Regulations, which you are sent as part of your study package will tell you how and when to do this.
