The School of Oriental and African Studies
CeFiMS - The Centre
for Financial & Management Studies, is an established Postgraduate
research and teaching department for finance, management and related
subjects at SOAS, The School of Oriental and African Studies, in the
University of London.
The School of Oriental
and African Studies (SOAS) is unique. It is the only higher education
institution in the UK specialising in the study of Asia and Africa.
With more than 200 academics dedicated to research and teaching in
these areas, it is now the world's largest institution of its kind.
It has a full range of humanities and social science departments as
well as ones specialising in language and culture. The School's ranking
in the most recent independent assessment of the quality of research
activities in UK universities puts us amongst the top research universities
in the country. The quality of research is matched by a strong commitment
to the teaching of our undergraduates. At SOAS, students are guided
by scholars who are at the forefront of their fields.
At the start of a new
millennium the University is more conscious than ever that the University
live in a world seemingly made small by the wonders of technology
and through the development of a global economy. This has led, perhaps,
to a greater awareness of the need to understand the world from a
range of perspectives and has created a demand for people with specialist
knowledge and skills needed for careers in an increasingly international
environment.
The University's aim
is to provide an excellent training in the student's chosen subject
or discipline; in addition the University help to equip you with a
range of skills - personal, cognitive and technological - essential
for the graduate of the 21st century.
The School's library
is the national resource for the study of Asia and Africa. With over
850,000 volumes, 4,500 periodicals plus an enormous collection of
audio-visual materials and special collections, the library caters
for many different teaching and research needs. In addition the School
is fortunate in having the award-winning Brunei Gallery, built in
1995, which contains both a teaching block and art gallery. The latter
hosts visiting exhibitions throughout the year. It also houses a small
permanent collection. The Percival David Foundation nearby offers
another invaluable resource for SOAS students as it contains the world's
most significant collection of Chinese ceramics outside Asia.
Established in 1916,
the School is part of the federal University of London and awards
degrees of the University. Although the School has grown rapidly in
the last decade to around 3,000 students, the University hope that
the University has managed to retain the friendliness and warmth which
were among the School's chief characteristics in its early days. Our
students can take advantage not only of what SOAS has to offer but
also of the benefits, personal and academic, of being part of the
University of London.
