Prerequisite – 11 Introduction to international relations

This subject examines elements of international organisation: its theory and practice studied through the constitution and experience of selected international institutions. This syllabus is mainly concerned with international organisation at the global level, but also includes regional and transregional arrangements. The following categories will be distinguished and defined for closer consideration.

  • The structure of intergovernmental organisations; their component parts and institutional dynamics
  • Global international organisation: historical and theoretical contexts of the League of Nations and
  • United Nations; process and progress; peace and security; law and normative development; economic and social development.
  • Selected examples of regional international organisation.
  • The Commonwealth as a transregional international organisation.
  • Enduring problems of international organisations.
  • International organisation as a dimension of international relations, as a higher form of conference diplomacy, and as an expression of human solidarity in confronting shared predicaments.
