BSc Information Systems and Management

Examinations & Awards

Examinations are usually held world-wide in May and June each year. For students in the UK and the Republic of Ireland examinations are usually held in London. For students in other countries the examinations will normally be held in the student’s country of residence.

Please click ---here--- for information about exam centres worldwide. [New Window]

The standard of the Access route examinations is the same as that for students studying the foundation units of the degrees in Economics, Management, Finance and the Social Sciences and is the same as that for students studying on-campus at a college of the University. Upon graduation of the full programme you will be awarded a degree which will be classified according to the marks you have obtained.

When you register as an External student you are not automatically entered for your examinations. There is a separate procedure and you have to apply to enter an examination. The Regulations, which you are sent as part of your study package, will tell you how and when to do this. The University will send you the Regulations when they give you an offer of registration and every year after that when they receive your continuing registration fee.

Each full unit will be examined by one three hour unseen written paper and each half unit will be examined by one two hour unseen written paper. The maximum number of attempts permitted at an examination for any half or full unit is three.

Standards

The quality of the degree you ultimately receive is assured in the following way:

  • your work is assessed to exactly the same standard as that for students studying at a College of the University. No concession in quality or academic rigour is given for the more difficult study circumstances of External students. You need to be reasonably confident that you have the ability to succeed in an examination before making your entry.
  • upon successful completion, you are awarded a University of London degree. There is only one University of London degree and it is awarded both to students attending in London and External students. The certificate states that you have studied as an External student and carries the following extract from the Statutes of the University of London: Statute 66(2) states, ‘Candidates granted degrees and other awards shall have attained the same academic standard irrespective of mode or place of study or examination.’
  • Colleges of the University and individual academic staff of the University are directly involved in the External Programme. They develop the syllabuses, write study materials, set examination papers and mark scripts. As a result, high academic standards are maintained;
  • most degrees have a ‘Lead’ College which takes responsibility for academic development.

Awards

There is no award after successful completion of the two Access Route units but they do provide access for students to continue onto one of the degree programmes available.

Undergraduate

Degree

Depending on the marks gained, degrees are awarded with First Class Honours, Upper Second Class Honours, Lower Second Class Honours, Third Class Honours or Pass.

Graduate Entry Route
This provides an opportunity for graduates of any discipline to gain an additional undergraduate degree by following a shorter than normal programme, successfully completing nine full units rather than twelve. This can normally be achieved in a minimum of two years with the exception of the BSc Economics, BSc Development & Economics and the BSc Information Systems & Management.
